Red Cross trains and supports Volunteers to befriend people at risk of homelessness in southern Tasmania.
Social isolation, or a lack of supportive social networks, can be a significant issue for a person experiencing homelessness. Through increasing the social and community networks of the participants, STAY Plus aims to reduce the likelihood of further homelessness for that person.
Clients of the STAY Program, an intensive case management service for people with a history of homelessness to help them remain in accommodation, are matched with Volunteers for the purpose of friendship and social interaction.
STAY Plus Volunteers and participants undertake community activities together, for example:
having a coffee
attending recreational or social events
A STAY Plus Volunteer must have:
Good verbal communication and listening skills
