What is the Australian Red Cross, South Australia Transport service?
The Red Cross Transport service enables people who have no access to other means of transportation to attend medical appointments. There is also limited transport available for people to attend social and family occasions.
The Transport service operates across the Adelaide metropolitan area, as well as in the South East Country and Eyre Peninsula regions, with regional offices located in Mt Gambier and Pt Lincoln. The regional offices operate as Community Passenger Networks, coordinating transport services in the region. The Community Passenger Network also provides transport information and transport for isolated clients to access services.
Last year, our dedicated team of over 350 volunteers provided more than 35,000 transport trips across South Australia, enabling people to gain access to medical appointments that they otherwise would not have been able to attend.
Who can use the Transport service?
The Transport service is for people who are frail, aged, younger people with disabilities, people who are financially disadvantaged or isolated and their carers. The service is specifically designed for the above groups who are not able to access any other means of transport, including public transport.
Is there any cost for the Transport Service?
There is an annual $20 administration/insurance levy that covers either a single person or family. Red Cross also asks for a small contribution each, to help cover the costs of providing the service. However, fees are not compulsory and will be determined on an individual basis.
How can I register for Transport?
Registration is required if you would like to receive the Red Cross Transport service for yourself or a family member. We register people before their first trip for funding, insurance and emergency reasons and to ensure that transport meets their individual needs. Registrations can be made over the telephone and can be made by yourself, a carer, social worker, doctor, family member or friend.
Once you are registered, you can begin to use the Transport service. Please note that bookings for transport are requested at least 24 hours in advance. On most occasions, if clients are booked for appointments at similar times, and in similar locations, then they will travel together.
How can you become involved in Transport?
You can become involved in the Transport service by becoming a transport volunteer driver, registering as a client, by referring family or friends, or by becoming a financial contributor.
