Our work in Indigenous communities
Aboriginal people, particularly those in remote communities such as the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankuntjatjara (APY) Lands 1200 kilometres north of Adelaide, are among the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in South Australia.

Returned to the traditional owners under Freehold Title in 1981, the APY lands stretch across 10 major communities covering about 3,000 Aboriginal people, many living traditional lifestyles.

Building partnerships

For over two years, Red Cross has been building partnerships with local communities and key agencies, to find out how Red Cross programs and training can assist in improving the lives of local people in the far North Western remote areas of South Australia; APY lands, and surrounding areas such as Coober Pedy, Oodnadatta, Port Augusta, Nepabunna, Copley and Ceduna.

Nutrition focused programs are underway as well as save-a-mate drug and alcohol harm minimisation training, first aid training, and mental health awareness.

Working locally

Red Cross is also employing local people to work for Red Cross in their own communities. The Australian Government’s Department for Employment and Workplace Relations 'STEP program' funding will provide training, mentoring and employment for up to 8 Anangu people.

Our Port Augusta Regional Centre opened in June 2007, to support this work.
