Emergency Services
Once activated, volunteers provide a registration and enquiry service, care, comfort and personal support in an emergency. Outreach assistance is also given to affected communities. Financial support is available to meet the immediate needs of accomodation, clothes and food after a fire, flood or in times of humanitarian need.

Training information

Emergency Services SA offers a variety of training to enable staff and volunteers to assist disaster affected people. Unless indicated, all sessions will be held at the Marleston Training Centre, 229 Marion Road, Marleston, SA.

All training sessions are subject to having appropriate numbers to effectively run the training. If numbers are not sufficient, then sessions will be deferred, and where possible, rescheduled.

Personal Support Training

Personal Support Training (PST) is an Australia wide package, focusing on training ES workers to work effectively with disaster-affected people. PST is the basic training course for all staff and volunteer Red Cross ES workers, and is valid for 3 years. The full session runs from 9am to 4:30pm, and contains 4 modules and a Recovery exercise.

The key modules are Communication Basics and Personal/Self Care, which are sessions on people skills. There are open book assessments on each module.

Intensive/refresher PST sessions can be arranged according to requirements, with running times varying from 2 to 4 hours. These sessions may require participants to complete pre-course material. Pre-course material will be sent to all participants approx 1 week prior to the training session. This material must be completed to pass the course. As above, there are open book assessments on each module.

National Registration and Inquiry System

National Registration and Inquiry System (NRIS) is the paperwork and database aspect of Emergency Services. These sessions focus on Registrations, Inquiries, the State Inquiry Centre (SIC), and the NRIS Data Base.

Team Leader Training

Team Leader Training is for staff/volunteers that have been selected to complete the 'next level' training, after having completed Personal Support and NRIS/SIC training. This session includes a communication skills module and team building / coordination / supervision modules. There is also an introduction to the AIIMS/ICS framework.

All training materials are supplied by Red Cross.
