Who should do this course?

  • an OH&S Officer reporting to an OH&S Coordinator/Manager
  • school leavers looking for a career in an area of increasingly perceived importance within organisations, in particular large, self-insuring organisations
  • trainers wishing to develop their portfolios in an area of growth and demand
  • individuals wishing to ultimately undertake the BSB51307 Diploma of Occupational Health and Safety which would qualify them to coordinate and maintain the OH&S program within an organisation.

Units of Competency

BSBOHS401B: Contribute to the implementation of a systematic approach to managing OHS
Completion of this unit will enable candidates to successfully contribute to the application of a systematic approach to managing OHS in the workplace. It applies to individuals with supervisory responsibilities for implementing and monitoring an organisation's OHS policies, procedures and programs in a work area. It includes contributing to the implementation of developed strategies, systems and plans, as well as recognising the need for expert advice.
 
BSBOHS402B: Contribute to the implementation of the OHS consultation process
Successful completion of this unit will enable candidates/individuals to contribute to the promotion of consultative arrangements in the work place by communicating, influencing and consulting as part of a systematic approach to managing OHS. It empowers individuals to address the formal and informal processes of ensuring people in the organisation are informed about OHS and have opportunities to effectively participate in OHS processes

BSBOHS403B: Identify hazards and assess OHS risk
Successful completion of this unit will equip individuals with the skills and knowledge required to identify hazards and assess OHS risks in the workplace. It applies to individuals with supervisory responsibilities in managing OHS in the workplace who identify hazards and assess risks using developed processes and tools.

BSBOHS404B: Contribute to the implementation of strategies to control OHS risk
Successful completion of this unit will enable individual to contribute to the implementation of strategies to control OHS risks. This unit applies to individuals who contribute to the Implementation of OHS risk controls in the workplace

BSBOHS405B: Contribute to the implementation of emergency procedures
Successful completion of this unit will allow individuals to contribute to the implementation of planning and response procedures for emergencies. It applies to individuals with supervisory responsibilities for managing OHS in the workplace who contribute to the implementation of procedures for responding to an emergency

BSBOHS408A: Assist with compliance with OHS and other relevant laws
Successful completion of this unit will give the individual an understanding of the legal and regulatory framework of OHS in order to provide advice regarding the OHS legislative responsibilities of an OHS practitioner, company director, manager, supervisor and employee. It applies to individuals with supervisory responsibilities for assisting with legal compliance as part of a systematic approach to managing OHS. Including identification of common law duty of care, appropriate legislation and regulations and the necessary actions to ensure compliance in the workplace

BSBRES401A: Analyse and present research information
Successful completion of this unit equips individuals with the skills and knowledge necessary to gather, organise and present workplace information using available systems. It applies to individuals who are required to apply their broad knowledge of the work environment to analysis and research tasks. They may have the responsibility to provide guidance or to delegate aspects of these tasks to others

BSBRSK401A: Identify and apply risk management processes
Successful completion of this unit will enable individuals to identify risks and apply risk management processes to a subset of an organisation or project's operation that are within the person's own work responsibilities and areas of operation. This unit applies a broad knowledge of risk analysis or project management who contribute well developed skills in creating solutions to unpredictable problems through analysis and evaluation of information from a variety of sources.

Occupational First Aid:
HLTFA401A: Apply Advanced Resuscitation
HLTFA403A: Manage First Aid in the Workplace
HLTFA402B: Apply Advanced First Aid

Successful completion of this course will provide individuals with the more advanced knowledge and skills to carry out emergency first aid for injuries and illnesses in the workplace. It will also provide information on state and federal legislations as it applies to workplace first aid.

Prerequisite requirements

A current Senior First Aid/Workplace Level 2 Statement of Attainment is a prerequisite for enrolment into Occupational First Aid. This can be arranged with Red Cross and booked either online or via our Customer Service team by phoning 1300 367 428. There are no prerequisites for any other unit of competency addressed in Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety.

Recognition of prior learning

Students may enter this course through a variety of entry points demonstrating the following:

  • completion of BSB30707 Certificate III in OH&S or other relevant Certificate III qualifications
  • providing evidence of competency in the majority of units required for the Certificate III in OH&S
  • extensive working experience in occupational health and safety roles (including, but not limited to Health and Safety Representatives, Health and Safety Committee Member, Health and Safety Officer).

Course duration

Maximum of 4 months, depending on qualifications and/or experience already attained.

Assessment method

Assessment is ongoing through assignments and demonstration of practical skills.

Course award

On successful completion of all nine units, participants will be issued the following nationally recognised certificate from the Business Services Training Package: BSB41407: Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety.
