Volunteers making the difference....
09 May 2003

Without the dedication of thousands of South Australians, Australian Red Cross would not have been able to reach over half a million people last year.

During National Volunteers Week, May 12-18, Australian Red Cross would like to recognise and thank the tremendous contribution made by volunteers, not only to Red Cross, but to those in greater need.

"In this day, time is precious, and to be able to spare a few hours a day, or a week, to help others is remarkable. I am proud to be a part of an organisation which values their volunteers and this week is one way we can give recognition and thanks for the tireless efforts that these amazingly dedicated people," said Dale Cleaver, Executive Director, Australian Red Cross, South Australia.

Australian Red Cross in South Australia has close to 19,000 dedicated volunteers that are representatives of one of the seven Red Cross Fundamental Principles - Voluntary Service - which applies to every aspect of our work along with Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Unity and Universality.

"Whether it be driving a person to meet that all important medical appointment, or a much awaited reassuring telephone call to let an isolated person know that we care, our volunteers are there ready and willing to assist in any situation," said Mr Cleaver.

Australian Red Cross is part of the largest global humanitarian network in the world. Today our organisation enjoys the support of close to 600,000 volunteers across Australia and 97 million internationally through the global Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

"Volunteering can evoke a sense of participation and ownership and enables people to make a meaningful contribution to their community," concluded Mr Cleaver.
