Red Cross’ work starts at home

Australian Red Cross, South Australia is launching a major public campaign to boost community support to help the 500,000 South Australians it assists each year.

Executive Director Dale Cleaver said that, while Red Cross was renowned as the world’s largest humanitarian organisation, a major focus of its efforts each year was local people and communities in need.

“Many people aren’t aware of the enormous amount of work Red Cross does locally and we need the community’s support so we can continue to help South Australians,” said Mr Cleaver.

With just five percent of its funding from government sources, Australian Red Cross, SA is launching a major television and radio communication campaign next week.  The campaign aims to raise knowledge of local services and to encourage people to give money, time or goods to help Red Cross in its community work.

In 2003 Australian Red Cross, SA assisted:
· 30,000 frail, ill and isolated people through the Red Cross transport service;
· 36,530 young people who were provided with drug and alcohol-related support and information at youth events;
· 3000 babies and young children who travelled safely in their family’s cars thanks to Red Cross’s qualified infant restraint fitters;
· 21,461 who people gained the skill and knowledge to help save lives through 1809 accredited first aid courses.

In a first for an Australian not-for-profit organisation, the new television commercial is an animated feature.  Local advertising agency kwp! produced it pro bono while acclaimed Adelaide animation company Anifex provided its services at a reduced rate.
