US Hurricane 2005 Relief Appeal closed

Australian Red Cross has officially closed its US Hurricane 2005 Relief Appeal.

The appeal, to assist American Red Cross to help people affected by Hurricane Katrina, raised almost $545,978. One hundred per cent of funds donated to this appeal have been passed on to American Red Cross to be used to provide shelter, hot meals, counselling and direct financial assistance to those in need.

Red Cross response

American Red Cross responded with its largest ever mobilisation of resources for a single natural domestic disaster. Since the hurricane made landfall, Red Cross has:

  • provided nearly 400,000 hurricane survivors with more than 3.1 million overnight stays in 1,150 shelters
  • housed more than 507,000 people in hostels, motels and shelters
  • served more than 31 million hot meals and snacks to hurricane survivors
  • provided nearly 455,000 people with disaster mental health services
  • distributed financial assistance to more than 2.6 million hurricane survivors

On behalf of our colleagues from American Red Cross we would like to thank all individuals, families and companies, as well as the Australian Government for contributing to this appeal,' said Mr Tickner.

Tracing missing relatives

Restoring Family Links website

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), in close cooperation with the American Red Cross, continues to assist people seeking information about their relatives possibly affected by Hurricane Katrina aided by the American Red Cross Family Linking website: www.katrinasafe.org. This database was used to record the names and details of persons seeking to re-establish contact with relatives or friends in the disaster area as well as those declared ‘safe and well.’ The American Red Cross Family Linking website remains available for viewing purposes.
