- this appeal is now closed

One year later in Bangladesh
A year ago in November 2007, Cyclone Sidr battered the coast of south-western Bangladesh, affecting more than 8.9 million people and causing large-scale economic and agricultural damage throughout much of the country.
While many survivors are yet to recover completely from the devastation of the cyclone, they are slowly rebuilding their houses and lives.
The Bangladesh government, the local Red Crescent and the International Red Cross, as well as other humanitarian organisations are working towards restoring both infrastructure and hope among the affected population, with livelihood and shelter projects.
Red Cross has:
- provided relief supplies for almost 80,000 families in 13 affected districts
- distributed extra food in four other districts
- provided 30,000 toolkits for reconstruction
- distributed 75,000 coconut saplings to provide wind protection for crops and to guard against salinity.
Over the next year, we aim to improve the living conditions of the most vulnerable people, and help them become more resilient to future disasters. |

| We are now focusing on:
- economic recovery through a livelihoods assistance program
- providing safe, healthy and culturally acceptable shelters
water, sanitation and basic health, including first-aid training
- providing psychological support for 20,000 of the most vulnerable survivors and volunteers.
In addition, Red Cross is helping to trace nearly 500 people missing after the disaster, to reconnect families.
Bangladesh Cyclone Appeal 2007
This appeal is now closed. The funds raised through this appeal will be used for the following activities:
- to support the immediate and short-term recovery needs of households affected by Cyclone Sidr including health, water and sanitation, livelihood support, shelter and food and non-food items
- to support relief, rehabilitation and on-going long term development activities of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in Bangladesh
- to fund the deployment of specialist aid workers to the country to assist in the International Red Cross Red Crescent response.
Australian Red Cross will deduct no more than 10 per cent of any donation for an international appeal to cover its appeal costs.
Should the funds raised exceed the amount required to meet the immediate and longer-term needs of the people in the affected areas, Australian Red Cross will use any excess funds to:
- support future Australian Red Cross programs of assistance in Bangladesh
- support the ongoing development of Bangladesh Red Crescent.
