Timor-Leste (East Timor)

For the people of the world's newest nation, life has been difficult in the past few years. Natural disasters like landslides, floods and locust plagues along with civil unrest have interrupted the development work of the Timor-Leste Red Cross Society.

Together, Australian and Timor-Leste Red Cross have delivered emergency assistance during the crises and continue to work on sustainable development projects.

Added to the civil unrest in April/May 2006, it was evident that an international humanitarian response was required to assist with the large number of displaced people.

The International Committee of the Red Cross increased its presence and became the lead agency providing emergency relief to affected communities. During the emergency period, Australian Red Cross supported these activities.

As well as the current unrest, Timor-Leste is prone to earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic activity. Land degradation increases the risk of landslides, mudslides and rock falls, particularly in the heavy monsoon rains between December and February. With the ongoing risk of conflict and natural disasters, it is vital that Timor-Leste is capable of preparing its communities for disaster.

Water and sanitation projects in Viqueque, Baucau and Manatuto districts now provide water and sanitation facilities in tandem with community-based health awareness. These projects are crucial in this young nation, where barely half the population has access to safe drinking water and sanitary facilities.

Current programs
Ongoing water and sanitation projects to evacuee settlement and reuniting families separated by unrest are among the current projects Australian Red Cross is involved with in Timor-Leste.
