Australian Red Cross response to Cyclone Larry

Early on Monday 20 March 2005, the category five, Tropical Cyclone Larry crossed the North Queensland Coast, lashing small communities with 290km an hour winds and leaving behind a trail of destruction.

In the true spirit of the organisation Australian Red Cross responded.
  • Australian Red Cross established three evacuation centres the day before the cyclone struck at Tully, Innisfail and Silkwood, and continued to provide shelter, food and comfort to those who lost homes.
  • Australian Red Cross managed three Distribution centres distributing food, water and clothing in Innisfail, and Babinda.

  • Outreach teams of volunteers continue to doorknock every street in the surrounding communities affected by the cyclone:
    • 35 staff and 340 volunteers have been mobilised in this exercise alone
    • 3000 separate visits have been made to families
    • Over 1500 boxes of food have been distributed to families
    • 135 families have been referred counselling
    • repeat calls to have been made to 511 families who needed ongoing support.
  • Red Cross staff and volunteers manned the registration centre in Police Headquarters in Brisbane from 20-24 March taking calls from concerned relatives:
    • 44 staff and 21 volunteers were mobilised
    • 4424 calls were taken from relatives and families inquiring about the cyclone
    • 465 evacuees were registered
  • Australian Red Cross ran two community development sessions over Easter in Babinda and Silkwood with over 100 families in attendance.

    Donations

    Australian Red Cross is not accepting donations for Cyclone Larry, and donations of goods from the public are not needed at this time.

    People wishing to make a financial donation are encouraged to do so through the Premier's Disaster Relief Appeal Fund which is the official appeal launched by the Queensland Government. Donations can be made online via the Queensland Government website http://www.qld.gov.au/, through any branch of the Commonwealth Bank or by phoning 1800 150 411.
