About the VAS
The VAs are a team of highly trained volunteers, who provide free first aid support at major sporting and cultural events.
Historically, Voluntary Aids worked extensively during both world wars to care for convalescing troops and in front-line hospitals. These days, most VAS members have full-time careers and volunteer during their spare time, usually on the weekend.
All VAS members receive training in disaster response and preparedness, and are constantly updating their first aid and advanced resuscitation skills. There are VAS units across NSW.
Where the VAs work
VA detachments work at events such as cross-country competitions, football games, Little Athletics, marathons, cycling events, netball games, fun runs, motorcross, triathlons, walkathons and sporting events for disabled athletes.
VAS detachments also cover civic functions including agricultural shows, Australia Day events, New Year's Eve events, Carols by Candlelight, Anzac Day ceremonies, fireworks displays, discos and cultural community events.
In rural areas, many VA detachments are involved in pony club and rodeo events, while in coastal areas, they often work closely with the Surf Life Saving Association.
During times of disaster, VA detachments sometimes assist Emergency Services, providing first aid back-up for ambulance crew and other supporting agencies.
