What's it all about?
Junior Red Cross is a way of involving 8- to 12-year-olds in their school and local community.
Students learn about leadership and life skills, exploring four basic themes:
- international friendship
- health and safety
- service to the community
- the work of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement
Junior Red Cross was founded in Australia by Mrs Eleanor MacKinnon OBE in 1914. Today Junior Red Cross operates in schools and communities right around Australia, and is part of a worldwide network of Red Cross and Red Crescent youth groups.
A Junior Red Cross Group is overseen by a leader, usually a schoolteacher. Through Junior Red Cross, students learn to value humanitarianism, active citizenship and volunteerism.
Ruby E. Storey Memorial Shield Award
This award is granted annually to a Junior Red Cross group whose members actively participated in Junior Red Cross and supported JRC's four themes: international friendship; health and safety; community service; and the work of the Red Cross. The award is given to one metropolitan and one regional school.
