The EnergyAustralia Red Cross Youth Challenge enables and encourages young people to contribute to their community.
Youth Challenge also encourages individuals and groups in the community to work in partnership with schools and youth groups in meeting local needs.
The 'Challenge' is open to teams of young people aged between 12 and 18 years. The goal is for each team to develop, implement and evaluate a 1-day to 8-week project of their own choice that will benefit the community - only limited by their imagination!
Some examples of projects are: setting up a Good Start Breakfast Club at a local primary school; creating a community garden; organising a clean-up campaign at a local park; fundraising for a Red Cross international appeal; establishing a youth community radio program.
Each team connects with an organisation or individual in their local community that has a need to be fulfilled. Throughout the process, young people are guided by a mentor. They also have a comprehensive resource kit, which empowers them with the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to become active voluntary citizens. All projects and participants will be considered for EnergyAwards at the end of the year.
Teams will be rewarded with the opportunity to learn about interdependence, diversity, tolerance and practical teamwork.
