Housing NSW Tenant Connect

The service

Tenant Connect is a community program provided by Red Cross for older tenants living in social housing across NSW. From July 2008, tenants living in public, community and Aboriginal housing can receive a free reassuring daily phone call to confirm they are safe and well.

Tenants who live alone and are aged 80 years or over and Aboriginal tenants aged 55 years or over not in daily contact with someone can apply to receive this service.

How Housing NSW Tenant Connect operates

Joining Tenant Connect means you will receive a short friendly daily call from a Red Cross volunteer at an agreed time.
If you don't answer the call the volunteer will wait 10 minutes and call again.

If there is still no response, your Housing NSW Tenant Connect coordinator will be notified and a key contact person (nominated by you) will be contacted to come to your home to check if you are OK.

A key contact person is someone you trust to have a key to your home and who can come and check on you should a call go unanswered. They might be a neighbour, friend or family member.

You will need to have access to a landline phone. If you don't, Red Cross can help you gain access via a service provider free of charge.

Receiving a free daily phone call

If you are a tenant living alone and would like to receive a daily phone call, contact Tenant Connect or call us on 1800 827 677.

Red Cross will then:

  • arrange a time to visit you at home
  • gather information to complete your application and
  • provide information about the service and how the program operates.

If you are eligible, you will start receiving your daily call from a Red Cross volunteer.

How can I help?
1. Become a volunteer

The success of the Tenant Connect service is dependent upon the commitment of its volunteers. Making a brief phone call to a client between 8am and 9am, volunteers are rostered on for
one month at a time. Volunteers are reviewed every three months, to ensure that their needs are being met.

For volunteers, rewards include the benefits of training and a sense of satisfaction in helping those most vulnerable in our community.

If you would like to volunteer or for general inquiries about this program, contact Tenant Connect or call 1800 827 677.

2. Make a donation

To support the delivery of Red Cross services and programs across Australia, go to the online donations form and select 'general donation - Australia' from the appeals drop-down menu.
