East Timor  
Before 1999, less than half of the population of East Timor had access to safe water, and according to the UN, most of the water systems were focused in urban areas. There is high seasonal rainfall, and abundant natural springs all through the mountainous country. However, those without ready access to water have to carry it for up to 5 km (up and down the hills) for their families to use.

During the ten years of conflict on Bougainville, virtually all infrastructure was destroyed, many people were killed and many others fled the towns to live in the jungles.
