Ms Norma McRae, a Queensland-based Registered Nurse and Midwife with experience working in Aboriginal communities, emergency departments and the Army, will depart Australia on Monday 3rd December for a three-month assignment as a Delegate to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Afghanistan.
Working as a Hospital Administrator in Kabul, Norma will assess the current capacity of hospitals where the ICRC have been involved in providing supplies and support to local Afghan staff. It will be her second mission to Afghanistan following an earlier assignment in 1991.
Her aim will be to establish priorities for the continuation or expansion of war surgical programs.
In 2000/2001 Norma undertook a mission in East Timor as a Hospital Administrator at the former ICRC managed facility in Dili. Her previous missions include -
1999 Hospital Administrator in Kenya for 560 bed ICRC war surgical hospital
1993/1994 Surgical ward nurse in Kenya, at the same time opening a feeding centre for severely malnourished people in Sudan
1991 Surgical ward nurse in Afghanistan
1990 Nurse and Midwife in a refugee camp in Malaysia.
