Update 4 on humanitarian activities of Red Cross and Red Crescent in response to the Asia quake and tsunamis disaster

Global Red Cross and Red Crescent response to the Asia Tsunami disaster has reached some 200,000 affected people within the first 10 days of the disaster. Below is the brief summary of some of the key relief activities and assistance provided so far:

  • More than 30 Red Cross flights with relief goods have arrived

  • Some 14 Emergency Response Units (ERUs) specializing in water purification, health care, logistics and telecommunications have been deployed

  • Over 9,000 Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers are providing survivors with food, clothes and other emergency articles throughout the region
  • Over 100 international Red Cross staff deployed, 6 of them Australian Red Cross

INDONESIA 6 Australian Red Cross delegates (water & sanitation expert, logistician, disaster response expert, information officer, project manager, health expert)

  • More than 800 volunteers of the Indonesian Red Cross and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have provided 1,000 tarpaulins, 1,800 family kits, clothing and emergency supplies

  • Relief for 20,000 people going to Meulaboh

  • Emergency food rations for 25,000 displaced in Medan

  • The ICRC plans to provide items such as buckets, tarpaulins and clothing for up to 300,000 people in Aceh; to set up a 100-bed field hospital; and to provide additional equipment to increase the supply of clean water in IDPs camps areas

  • 6 ERUs deployed in Indonesia (2 Basic Health Care, 2 Water & Sanitation, 1 Telecommunications and 1 Logistics)

  • 32-person PMI disaster response team in Meulaboh to provide medical and relief support

  • 2 hospitals in Aceh received medical supplies, including body bags from the ICRC.

SRI LANKA 2 Australian Red Cross delegates (health and tracing experts)

  • Supplies for 80,000 people flown into the country

  • Assistance delivered to 60,000 people (household items such as bed sheets, buckets and cooking sets)

  • 8 ERUs Emergency Response Units on the ground 3 Basic Health, 2 Water sanitation, 1 Telecom and 1 Logistics Unit, 1 Relief Unit

  • Medical teams (doctors and volunteers) dispatched to 10 districts

  • 40,000 people being assisted and housed in 66 Red Cross camps

  • More than 3,000 Sri Lankan Red Cross volunteers are working with relief operations at branches in districts affected by the Tsunami.
Approximately 5,000 Sri Lankan Red Cross volunteers are active in the branches countrywide, assisting in first aid, mobile health care, cleaning wells etc


  • Thai Red Cross is the lead agency for all food distributions

  • 60 Thai Red Cross volunteers packing food, water and hygiene items fore distribution

  • Mobile Red Cross Health teams treating people in 12 camps

  • In Tak Kua Pa district Red Cross mobile kitchen feeding 2,000 people


  • Tamil Nadu: 4,000 saris, bed sheets and towels delivered by Red Cross.

  • 3,500 cases of water distributed to survivors

  • 300 volunteers, 25 doctors and 15 ambulances joined the relief effort.

  • 5,000 families received family kits of blankets, mosquito nets, cooking utensils, clothes and other items, 10,000 kitchen sets being distributed

  • Andaman and Nicobar Islands: 1,000 bed sheets, 400 tarpaulins and 400 kitchen sets delivered


  • The ICRC and Myanmar Red Cross about to carry out assessments in the island areas

  • 200 family kits distributed to affected families, more to be distributed in 13 affected villages


  • FACT (field assessment) team deployed

  • Target for assistance is 10,000 people


  • Malaysian Red Crescent is providing food in 11 relief centres in Kedah

  • Red Crescent volunteers already providing psychological support in hospitals

  • Ten-member medical team on way to Aceh in support of Indonesian Red Cross activities
