Update 3 on the Humanitarian activities of Red Cross and Red Crescent in affected areas

Red Cross and Red Crescent relief and response activities in Asia continue apace, with staff from more than 20 countries working alongside thousands of local staff.

So far, the global response has included:

  • More than 10 Red Cross relief flights with essential emergency aid arrived in various countries
  • 2 Field Assessment teams (FACT) deployed in Indonesia, Sri Lanka
  • 9 Red Cross ERUs - Emergency Response Units deployed - mainly Basic Health, Water & Sanitation and Logistics units
  • Thousands of volunteers working from the beginning of the crisis, collecting bodies, administering first aid, delivering aid and helping trace missing people

Highlights of selected Red Cross and Red Crescent humanitarian activites as at 2 January 2005

INDONESIA - 4 Australian Red Cross delegates on the ground

  • Indonesian Red Cross (Palang Merah Indonesia, PMI) is working with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to provide relief in the most affected area of Aceh
  • FACT (field assessment) team visited Meulaboh, and Basic Health ERU about to be deployed there
  • More than 800 PMI volunteers continue assisting in the region, distributing 1,000 tarpaulins, 1,800 family kits, clothing and emergency supplies
  • 2 hospitals in Aceh received medical supplies, including body bags from the ICRC
  • The ICRC is planning distribution to 300,000 people and deployment of a 100-bed field hospital.

SRI LANKA - 2 Australian Red Cross delegates on the ground

  • Assistance delivered to 60,000 people (household items such as bed sheets, mats, buckets and cooking sets)
  • 6 ERUs Emergency Response Units on the ground - 2 Basic Health, 2 Water sanitation, 1 Telecom and 1 Logistics Unit, two more in the pipeline
  • Medical teams (doctors and volunteers) dispatched to 10 districts
  • 40,000 people being assisted and housed in 66 Red Cross camps
  • Thousands of volunteers from Sri Lanka Red Cross engaged.
  • FACT (field assessment) team deployed
  • Target for assistance is 10,000 people.
  • Thai Red Cross is the lead agency for all food distributions
  • In Tak Kua Pa district Red Cross mobile kitchen feeding 2,000 people
  • Hundreds of volunteers continue with the massive relief effort, delivering body bags, distributing hygiene items and deploying medical staff to provide medical services.
  • Malaysian Red Crescent is providing food in 11 relief centres in Kedah
  • Red Crescent volunteers already providing psychological support in hospitals
  • Ten-member medical team on way to Aceh in support of Indonesian Red Cross activities.
