Tasmanian Bushfires Appeal 2013

Vital funds, including a significant donation from The Prince of Wales, are continuing to flow in for the Red Cross Tasmania Bushfires 2013 Appeal as people from across the country show their support for the fire affected communities.

Red Cross Executive Director Tasmania, Ian Burke, said support for the Appeal to date has been overwhelming and will contribute badly needed funds to help fire affected communities recover from this devastating disaster.

"The support for this Appeal has once again demonstrated the generosity and camaraderie of the Australian people in the face of a crisis," said Mr Burke.

Thousands of individuals and families have already contributed to the Appeal, while a number of state governments, community groups and corporations have also pledged their support.

In addition to running the Appeal, Red Cross volunteers are providing emotional support in fire affected communities and helping people who have been forced to evacuate their homes reconnect with friends and family through the Red Cross registration system.

His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales has donated to the Appeal. In a letter to the Governor of the Tasmania The Prince of Wales, said "Having visited Tasmania so recently, and retaining countless fond and happy memories of all those we met, my wife and I were profoundly saddened to hear of the appalling bushfires which have caused such dreadful damage and despair across the island."

Red Cross launched the Tasmanian Bushfires 2013 Appeal at the invitation of the Tasmanian Government in order to provide assistance to people and communities impacted by the devastating bushfires.

"We are currently working with the Tasmanian Government to establish an independent committee to oversee the distribution of funds and expect an announcement on the formation of the committee shortly," said Mr Burke.
