Road map for Woorabinda Aboriginal community

Red Cross and leaders of the central Queensland Woorabinda Aboriginal community have launched a plan that sets out a wide-ranging blueprint for working together to improve outcomes for people locally.

Speaking at an event in Woorabinda today Red Cross Queensland Executive Director Kevin Keeffe said Red Cross has been working with the community for a decade and plans to stay for the long haul.

"Red Cross currently employs 12 staff locally, 11 of whom are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. We work alongside the community on services including with youth, families, women, older people, people caught up in the justice system, and people with mental health issues," he said.

"This plan gives a vision for the way we will do business in Woorabinda over the next five years. It supports the values and aspirations of the community, and we will be delighted to hand responsibilities and resources to the community when it decides it is ready to take over the services we currently deliver."

Mayor Terry Munns said the council welcomes Red Cross' ongoing commitment to the community.

"This plan reinforces our joint approach with all residents and organisations to work together to make our vision a reality. Our vision is for a community of opportunity. The council working with community partners such as Red Cross means we can achieve our goals, and we can be sure our community is on the way up," Cr Munns said.

"Red Cross is one of our strategic partners and an ally. We are pleased we can continue this relationship well into the future."

The Woorabinda Aspirational Plan 2015 - 2020 launched today sets out targets, timeframes and actions for a wide range of activities, taking in everything from employment, training, schooling, justice, economic development and family support.

It includes:

• Red Cross to continue to provide a Women's and Children's Wellbeing Centre

• Red Cross to ensure 100% of local positions are filled by local people

• Working together to ensure at least 90% of young people attain Year 12 or a vocational equivalent

• Working with youth to develop leadership, academic and artistic potential

• Working with schools and parents to improve parent engagement in education

• Working to ensure a decreased rate of imprisonment

• Supporting people's recovery from mental illness

• Improved emergency management and recovery from natural disasters, and

• Ongoing monitoring of our ways of working
