Red Cross launches Tasmanian Bushfires Appeal

Red Cross has launched the Tasmanian Bushfires 2013 Appeal at the invitation of the Tasmanian Government in order to provide assistance to people impacted by the devastating bushfires.

Sunday January 6, 2013

Red Cross Executive Director Tasmania, Ian Burke, said Tasmania has experienced extremely high risk fire conditions in recent days, fuelling multiple bushfires that have affected thousands of people across the state.

"The bushfires continue to rage and have already burnt through dozens of properties, with reports that around 100 homes and the local school have been lost in the town of Dunalley," said Dr Burke.

"Many families now face a huge challenge to rebuild their lives. The priority for this Appeal will be to assist people directly affected by the bushfires and we urge Australians to donate funds to help the people of Tasmania recover from this devastating disaster.

"Red Cross can only accept financial contributions as part of this Appeal. We are not in a position to accept donated goods or distribute them to affected people."

Funds raised through the Tasmanian Bushfires 2013 Appeal will be used to assist individuals, families and communities directly affected by the January 2013 Tasmanian bushfires. The funds raised will be distributed through an independent committee which will involve community input.

Australian Red Cross will not deduct any funds from public donations for appeal or administration costs. Should the funds raised exceed the amount required, Australian Red Cross will use any excess funds to assist in future disasters in Australia. All interest earned on donations will be invested back into the appeal.

Red Cross volunteers are currently on the ground in Tasmania providing emotional support to people forced to flee their homes by the fires.

People in the areas affected by the Tasmanian bushfires, including those who might be travelling in the area and people who have been evacuated from their homes, are being urged to register their details with Red Cross under National Registration and Inquiry System (NRIS).

People can register their details or look up friends and family who are thought to be in the bushfire affected areas online via the link to NRIS on the Red Cross homepage or by calling the State Inquiry Centre on 1800 727 077.
