Do you know what you would do in a disaster - where would you go, what you'd take, who would you turn to for help?

Got a New Year's resolution yet? We've one for you - make a plan of exactly what you would do if disaster struck in your community this summer.

Forecasters are predicting another scorching summer for Australia - with a higher than normal risk of bushfires and heatwaves. "Based on the current climate forecasts Australia can expect similar conditions to last summer with dry conditions, severe heat waves, and bushfires to be the predominant risk," says Australian Red Cross' National Manager Emergency Services Andrew Coghlan.

Disasters are unpredictable and indiscriminate - we can't change that - but we can all be prepared. We have lots of free simple resources to take you through the four steps you need to prepare.

"Being prepared can help make coping with and recovering from a disaster easier. Prepared means understanding the risks, knowing the people in your community and neighbourhood, and having an emergency plan and kit.
