Important information about fraudulent websites, email and hoaxes
Australian Red Cross advises all donors to be aware of hoax email, website scams or bogus collectors deceiving people into donating to an Australian Red Cross appeal.
Please be aware:
- Australian Red Cross DOES NOT send unsolicited email to the public requesting donations.
- If you receive an unsolicited email alleging to be on behalf of Red Cross or collecting for Red Cross, immediately delete the message and do not forward or otherwise circulate it.
- Do not respond to these messages or provide any personal details to unsolicited email that you may receive.
- Only make an online donation to an Australian Red Cross Appeal at https://www.redcross.org.au/.
Email warning about Australian Spider bite
An email warning purporting to come from Australian Red Cross about an Australian spider bite is not an official communication. We do not send unsolicited emails with health warnings, and therefore cannot verify any of the information contained in this email, so please do not forward it on.
Victorian Bushfire appeal - tin collections
Donations through the website or phone 1800 811 700 are the preferred ways of donating to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal. However, there are Red Cross members and many other good folk around the country who are fundraising for the Victorian Bushfire Appeal in a variety of ways, including 'tin shaking' or tin collections.
Red Cross members are badged and easily identified, however, given the unprecedented response to this disaster and Appeal, there are many individuals and organisations who are fundraising independently. When Red Cross is contacted by anyone wanting to raise money, we register them and provide them with a set process to bank the funds raised. However, many do not contact us at all.
During these kinds of large community driven appeals there are unfortunately often a handful of people who do the wrong thing and this is very difficult to control. If you have any doubt about the validity of a person collecting money by shaking a tin, go online and make a secure donation using our online donations form, or phone 1800 811 700.
Security
Donating online is secure and safe, but you should be as vigilant when donating online as you would be when using Internet banking.
To check site security at the donations page, look for the security padlock on your browser page (this is often at the bottom right of the browser window, but in later versions of Internet Explorer the padlock is located at the top of the browser window to the right of the address bar). Double-clicking on the padlock will show the security certificate information issued by Thawte and it must say http://www.redcross.org.au/.
