Critical issues
Protecting people
IHL aims to protect those who are not fighting (civilians) and those who are no longer fighting (sick and wounded combatants, prisoners of war). Protected people must be provided with necessary assistance and treated humanely.

Weapons
The use of weapons is a serious humanitarian issue. IHL regulates which weapons can be used and how they can be used. The development of a new international treaty on cluster munitions is the latest exciting development in this area.

Missing people
A common and devastating result of conflict is for family members and loved ones to go missing. Tracing programs play an important role in piecing together the fate of people following conflict.

Cultural property
The significance of cultural property is reinforced under the IHL Conventions which protect and criminalise their damage in times of military operations.
