Promoting respect for international humanitarian law

The IHL Handbook for Parliamentarians aims to enhance understanding of the nature and importance of international humanitarian law and encourage Parliamentarians to more effectively promote respect for 'the laws of war'.

Australian Red Cross has taken the lead and initative within the Movement to reproduce this publication with the support and guidance of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

We greatly value the assistance received for our humanitarian work in Australia and internationally, from members of all political parties and independents in state, territory and national parliaments.

We hope this handbook will be a useful tool for Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies building relationships with parliamentary representatives throughout the world, in order to add legitimacy to the message 'even wars have limits'.

Promoting respect for international humanitarian law: a handbook for Parliamentarians'.

The Parliamentarians' Handbook will enhance understanding of IHL and encourage them to promote respect for the laws of war.
