Australian Red Cross Appeals

Please note: Information about the recent disasters in Asia/Pacific, can be found on the Pacific Tsunami information page, the Indonesian Earthquake information page, and the Typhoon Ketsana information page.

Current appeals

Australian Red Cross actively responds to disasters and conflicts and provides assistance to vulnerable people in communities both at home and abroad.

One of the most immediate ways that you can help victims of any emergency or people in need is by supporting an appeal.

International appeals

You can make an online donation by credit card to an international appeal by visiting our online donations page.

General information

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is a lead player in responding to disasters wherever they occur around the globe. The Australian Red Cross, through its links with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (Federation), plays a major role in that response.

If you make a donation to an international appeal, the money you give will be spent on assisting people in the region you nominate.

Australian Red Cross will not deduct more than 10% of any donation for an international appeal to cover its own costs. The rest of the donation goes to provide assistance to the victims. Should the funds raised exceed the amount required to meet the immediate and longer-term needs of the people in the affected areas, Australian Red Cross will use any excess funds to help people affected by emergencies within the same region of the world. All donations over $2 are tax deductible.

Donations of relief goods, medical equipment and other items

Australian Red Cross does not accept donations of 'goods in-kind' for the following reasons:

  • the logistics of transporting and distributing 'in-kind' donations can often be very expensive as well as time consuming, in particular organising clearances to foreign countries and arranging transportation to remote areas.
  • responding to the assessed needs of the affected population is our priority. 'In-kind' donations are frequently not based on identified needs and may be inappropriate for cultural or religious requirements of the affected population.

Australian Red Cross believes that essential relief items should be purchased locally where possible, to ensure appropriateness of the goods for the local population and to assist the local economy.

Domestic appeals

Today, Australian Red Cross is active in every State and Territory in Australia, and provides over 60 community services, ranging from blood supplies and disaster services to first aid and refugee services.

You can make an online donation by credit card to a domestic appeal by visiting our online donations page.

Please note: The Victorian Bushfire Appeal closed on 17 April. For information about the Appeal, please visit the Bushfire Appeal information page.
