Wars are a reality in many parts of the world today. All too often, civilians, including women, children and the elderly are caught up in conflicts while they are going about their daily lives.

International humanitarian law is a set of rules which aim to limit suffering and protect the vulnerable during times of armed conflict.

While they are not always followed, these laws of war continue to save lives: of civilians including children, humanitarian workers and journalists, as well as the captured and wounded.

Red Cross champions the Geneva Conventions – the cornerstone of the laws of war - which are universal and remind us of our common humanity.
