World Red Cross Day

Highlighting an important humanitarian issue

On World Red Cross Day 2008, Australian Red Cross is using this important commemoration to highlight the global food security crisis.

CEO Robert Tickner has emphasised that our relative wealth does not make us impervious to the effects of food shortages, and that already thousands of Australia's most vulnerable people lack adequate access to affordable, nutritious food.

His opinion piece highlights the local implications of this global issue.

What is World Red Cross Day?

Each year, on 8 May, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement marks World Red Cross Red Crescent Day by highlighting the role of its staff and volunteers in saving lives and assisting vulnerable communities around the world.

The day is extremely significant for the Red Cross, as it is the birthday of founder Henri Dunant.

Together for Humanity

The global theme of this year's event is 'Together for Humanity'. The theme highlights the importance and power of partnerships in addressing the humanitarian consequences of climate change.
