When: Sunday 8th June 2008 Queens Birthday Long Weekend Where: Katherine NT, 321 kilometres south of Darwin, on the Katherine River, below the famous Katherine Gorge Katherine river: The section of the Katherine River on which the marathon is held consists predominantly of long deep water holes separated by sets of rapids. Uniquely the only Canoe race in the Northern Territory, the Katherine Canoe Marathon is a one day event and covers approximately a 47km long course and a 20 km short course, with an average paddling time of 9 hours.

Red Cross has been organising the Katherine Canoe Marathon for 27 years.  PowerWater have been involved for eight years as the major sponsor. This annual fundraising event plays a significant role throughout the Katherine community, as monies raised enable Red Cross to provide vital community services within the region.

Over 100 paddlers from all parts of Australia travel to the Territory to participate. Red Cross volunteers and staff work tirelessly to organise this event every year.

It's a great way for families, friends and work colleagues to get together for a cool 'Dry' Season holiday and experience this unique event over the Queen's birthday long weekend of 7th, 8th and 9th June, and to be involved with the world's largest humanitarian organisation.

Sponsorship requirements:
All entrants are encouraged to seek sponsorship. Senior canoeists must obtain sponsorship of at least $80.00 each (juniors $40). Teams must raise $300.
