Talk about the humanitarian impact of the Syria Crisis

Talking points:

Five years ago, civil conflict broke out in Syria. In those five years, we've seen the biggest humanitarian crisis since the Second World War.

When Red Cross launched the Syria Crisis Appeal in 2012, there were over a million Syrian people who were displaced within Syria or had fled across the border.

Today, five years of intense violence have left 18 million Syrian people in urgent need of help to ensure this crisis - that's almost 80% of Australia's population.

Through donations, Red Cross Red Crescent helps 4.5 million people each month with:

  • emergency food parcels and safe drinking water
  • emergency health care, including first aid and vaccinations
  • hygiene kits with toothpaste, soap, toilet paper and other essentials
  • blankets to keep out the cold
  • cash grants to help the poorest families pay for medical bills,
  • rent and school fees

Your donation will give the families of Syria hope that the world still cares about them, that one day a solution can be found and they can go home again. Your generosity can make a difference, even in a crisis this huge.

You can make a tax-deductible donation at redcross.org.au/syriacrisis or by calling 1800 811 700.

Write a letter to the editor

Write to your local newspaper and ask people in your community to support the Syria Crisis Appeal. Here is a sample letter to get you started.

Dear Editor,

Five years ago civil conflict broke out in Syria. In those five years, we've seen the biggest humanitarian crisis since the Second World War.

I am deeply moved by the devastating impact the war has had on millions of people, especially young people like me. For very young children, all they have known is poverty, suffering and violence.

As a passionate Red Cross member I know that every month Red Cross Red Crescent reaches 4.5 million people across Syria in desperate need with essential aid such as blankets, food, drinking water and medical care. They also provide winter clothing and hygiene kits that help keep people from fleeing from one place to another to find a place they can survive.

Please help Syrian families survive by making a donation to the Syria Crisis Appeal. We can give the families of Syria hope that the world still cares about them, that one day a solution can be found and they can go home again.

Yours sincerely,
[Your name and address]
