Big Cake Bake
Families from the Red Cross Young Parents Program at a baking event in Sydney.

This month, kitchens across Australia are filling with the delicious aromas of homemade cakes and baking delights as the Australian Red Cross' first ever national Big Cake Bake fundraiser kicks off around the country.

Big Cake Bake is a simple, fun and social fundraising event which encourages Australians to come together and share fabulous homemade cakes and delights in their workplaces, schools and social groups. The best part is, it makes eating cake practically guilt-free with all funds raised going to help those who are most in need including some of the most vulnerable families across Australia and overseas.

And if guilt-free cake is not a big enough incentive on its own, if you register to host a Big Cake Bake event and raise a minimum of $100 in donations and send to Red Cross by 30th November you will have the chance to win* a return trip for two to Tokyo, Japan to dine in Bill Granger's restaurant - bills Odaiba, thanks to event partner White Wings.

In celebration of the start of Big Cake Bake month, this week some of the families from the Red Cross Young Parents Program held a baking event in Sydney. The program helps young parents develop the skills needed to parent independently through education and volunteer support.

One of the graduates of Red Cross Young Parents Program, Liana spoke about her past mistakes and eagerness to learn from them so she and her little daughter can have a better life than previous generations of women in the family. Her mum, grandma and great-grandma all had children taken from them and Liana is determined to break the cycle.

"That's why the Young Parents Program is so important", she says, "because it teaches people like me the skills to parent properly and helps find a proper home for me and my child."

This is just one example of the many services Red Cross is able to offer those families across Australia who are most vulnerable.

So for the thousands of hosts already registered - it's time to put all your delicious cake recipes to good use and start baking!
