Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteer opportunities exist with most services at Red Cross throughout the year.
Red Cross Office
Volunteers assist program coordinators with office and administrative duties.
Community Visitors Scheme
Volunteers visit a resident in an aged care facility on a weekly or fortnightly basis to provide emotional and social support.
Disaster Services
Red Cross supports the Australian Federal Police in carrying out its responsibility to register affected persons, and respond to inquiries from concerned friends and family members. Trained volunteers are on stand-by to help during and after a disaster situation.
Fundraising
Volunteers support the many activities of the Fundraising Department including the Red Cross Calling Door-Knock Appeal and special events.
Hand Massage Service
Volunteers offer a free hand massage service to patients at The Canberra Hospital Oncology and Maternity Wards. Volunteers must be qualified in massage through CIT or a recognised training provider.
International Humanitarian Law
People who are interested in International Humanitarian Law (IHL) assist with disseminating IHL information.
Meals on Wheels
Volunteers work in pairs delivering meals to frail elderly people or younger people with a disability. Meals are delivered daily from centres in Belconnen and Holder. Volunteers can also help in the packing of frozen meals at Holder.
Hospital Volunteers Service
Volunteers offer support to patients and carers attending chemotherapy, haematology or radiation at The Canberra Hospital. They also visit and support patients in the Oncology Ward and operate the resource library and trolley.
Personal and Dementia Alarm Services
Volunteer roles include calling people with Personal Alarms to remind them to test their units, answering the telephone, filing and general office tasks.
Roadhouse
Volunteers assist with the preparation and serving of free nutritious meals to disadvantaged people on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday each week.
save-a-mate
Red Cross is looking for young people, aged 18 to 30, who are interested in assisting with the delivery of drug and alcohol information sessions to young people and other interested groups. Support and mentoring is provided. Volunteers are required to undertake a 6 hour Save-A-Mate training course.
Telecross
Volunteers make a short phone call each day to provide a friendly security check for frail orlder, younger disasbled, or convalescing people.
Volunteer Home Visitor Service
Volunteers visit frail aged or younger disabled people in their own homes on a regular basis to provide emotional and social support.
Youth and Education Services
Youth and Educaton Services has many different facets including school programs such as Junior Red Cross and school visits. There are also other opportunities for young people up to the age of 25.
