Bi-Cultural Community Health Program

This program assists culturally and linguistically diverse people who are newly arrived in Tasmania, especially refugees, to make informed decisions and independently access appropriate health services.
Bi-Cultural Community Health Workers also assist the services to understand different cultural approaches to health and how to provide responsive and effective services to people from diverse backgrounds.

Blood Service

The Red Cross Blood Service provides collections, processing and distribution of blood products from voluntary donors for use within Tasmania. Visit the Blood Service website to find the location of the donor centre nearest you.

Christmas Assistance

Red Cross provides vulnerable individuals and families who are referred by a social worker, with food hampers and/or toys to enable them to enjoy Christmas.

Community Visitors Scheme

The Community Visitors Scheme is a federally funded initiative which aims to improve the quality of life of residents of aged care homes who are vulnerable due to their isolation. In the past year, over 130 volunteers regularly visited over 200 people in more than 50 aged care facilities. Activities included general chats, board games, reading, visits to the Botanical Gardens, sharing counter meals at a hotel, and having a little flutter at the casino.

We are always looking for volunteers to assist us with this program.

Delivered Meals Service

In the North and North Western regions of Tasmania, Red Cross delivers meals to people, of all ages who cannot reasonably get a meal for themselves, because of sickness, or a temporary medical condition. Eligibility is based on need.

Over the past year, Delivered Meals volunteers have delivered 352,530 three course meals and 9,484 frozen main meals which is a total of 19,255 voluntary hours.

Emergency Services

Red Cross Tasmania's role is the registration of evacuees from an emergency / disaster and the response to inquiries from concerned relatives and friends. Assistance is also given to other agencies involved in the emergency / disaster.

Emergency Home Alarm Service

Red Cross operates a 24 hour emergency service providing security for the aged and help at the press of a button. This allows people to continue living at home, confident in the knowledge that help is always at hand.

First Aid & Mobility Equipment Centre

Red Cross has a comprehensive range of first aid kits and supplies, as well as a complete range of mobility aids, including electric scooters and wheelchairs for sale and hire.

The First Aid & Mobility Equipment Centre is located at 110 Elizabeth St, Hobart.

Good Start Breakfast Club

Good Start Breakfast Club (GSBC) is a new program for Tasmania but it is a part of a nation-wide Red Cross program which involves about one hundred schools. The GSBC works with schools and their local communities to help to address barriers to good morning nutrition. The program works with selected schools by recruiting and training volunteers and helping the school to source donations of food and drinks. It also works with the school to develop a broader whole-of-school approach to nutrition.

Home Units for the Elderly

Red Cross, Tasmania has one bedroom home units across the state situated in Burnie, Kingston, New Norfolk, New Town, Richmond and Westbury. The idea for the units originated from the 1967 bush fires and the units at New Town were handed over to use by the Ex Service Women's Association.

Our Branches in the various areas are involved in the units, visiting the residents and also welcoming new residents.

Hospital Service

Red Cross volunteers provide comfort and care to hospital patients in the North and North West of the state by operating canteens, trolleys, and courier and information services within the public and private hospital systems.

International Humanitarian Law (IHL)

Red Cross promotes an understanding of, and respect for the laws that provide protection for victims of armed conflict. Red Cross provides trained community speakers who promote an understanding of the impact of armed conflict and similar global issues.

International Tracing & Refugee Service

Red Cross helps reunite families separated by war, internal disturbance and disasters. Red Cross assists in forced labour issues; internment of death of civilians or members of the armed forces during conflict. Compassionate leave for US Armed Forces can also be accessed.

Maternity Support Service

This service is based in the Women's and Children's Department of the Royal Hobart Hospital. Volunteers provide practical support to new mums including running messages (particularly in the first day or two after delivery) and delivering and caring for flowers.

Mental Health Programs

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) courses enable people to provide assistance to someone experiencing a mental health problem or crisis. To enrol in a MHFA course please contact us.

MATES (Mentally ill people And Their Equal Supporters) trains and supports volunteers in befriending people who live with a mental illness. Over the past year about 100 volunteers across Tasmania have been active in the program around the state, with over 150 mates referred to the program.

Patient Support Service

The Patient Support Service gives reassurance and compassionate support to all people attending the Emergency Medicine Department of the Royal Hobart Hospital. The Service operates from 3pm to 9pm on weekdays and from 12noon to 9pm on weekends.

'Comfort Teddies' are knitted by Red Cross volunteers across the state and presented to ill or injured children. The children derive great comfort from the teddies and are delighted to be able to take them home. We also provide teddies to some emergency services.

Prison Support Program

The program provides training to selected inmates within the Risdon Prison complexes. It supports the induction of new prisoners by using skilled inmates as mentors and also helps to prepare inmates who are due to be released by familiarising them with links into the community.       
All volunteers will be given extensive training.

Red Cross works to promote the health and wellbing of young people by providing education, service and support on key current and emerging health issues, particularly those related to alcohol and other drug use and mental health.

Red Cross in Tasmania will gratefully accepts donations of clothing, books and bric a brac that is in good condition that can be sold in Opportunity and Bookshops throughout Tasmania.

Single Incident Emergency Relief

Red Cross provides clothing, baby bundles, toiletries and bedding to persons affected by fire, flood or other incident.

Telecross Daily Phone Support

Telecross volunteers provide reassurance and comfort through daily telephone calls to those housebound due to age, frailty or social isolation.

Transport

Red Cross provides transport to and from medical appointments only, for people who have no other means of attending their appointments.

"...and who drove around the world almost nine times in the past year? The volunteers of the Red Cross Client Transport Service did! We travelled more than 300,000 km to make 16,000 trips to get people to and from their medical appointments." This service is supported by the Circular Head and Wynyard Lions clubs.
